My 1995 Ford Escort - may- have a small Transmission Fluid leak. This is because the Oil Change shop couldn't come to a conclusion about whether it was leaking or not, they just saw (smelled? They were under the car when it was off) what looked like Transmission Fluid wither seeping, or trying to seep, from the pan. I didnt look at it myself, but I saw the tech (young kid) wondering if it really was a leak.
My transmission has 148,000 miles. My bigegst concern is how to change the Vacuum line someone in another post said may be contributing greatly to rough shifts *and I was going to ask that person where to find it, and if it is common for shops to change it, to help it shift better, since it makes sense it would affect it.
As for the Fluid itself: I recently added a little under a quart, as it was low. I did so after my drive from NJ to Westernmost PA.Now my transmission is OK, and it felt good on the Highway. (I wonder if the fluid level went 'up' on the highway, like Tire Pressure does, due to heat and expansion, thus making it feel OK.)
-I- feel like if the Transmission Is leaking, or seeping, or wanting to leak, the leak would be from the Gasket. If that is so, I would love a shop that has no qualms about working on it to:
1) Drop the Transmission Pan,
2) Change the Gasket and Screen and Filter, as all three are on an AT if I recall right;
3) -NOT- FLUSH THE FLUID THAT IS IN THERE AND THE TORQUE CONVERTER, as I believe the stories about new ATF killing Old ATs when they are flushed and changed completely; and
4) Re-filling the lost ATF with Valvoline MaxLife, probably about 3 quarts for the pan-dropping, maybe with 1 bottle of Stop-Leak MaxLife ATF added... And Vaccum line 'changed,' Gasket and Transmission replaced, Transmission saved, 1/3 the fluid changed. I would -love- to do this.
Is that the best way to go here? Will I be able to find a shop to pay to -do- that? A transmission place will charge more and want to do it all, right? So should I just look for a general mechanic, and talk him into it?
Or should I just pour the Stop-Leak ATF in there and hope it seals itself? I heard that too much of that is NOT good.
Anything else I need to be aware of with this issue, of wanting to service my still-good transmission before it becomes worse in a way that won't kill it?

If you have not had the transmission serviced, at 140,000 miles it needs it. So just find a shop that will service it right. That is the filter removed, cleaned/replaced, and refilled. But avoid chain transmission and auto service franchises (like AAMCO).
Yes, transmission fluid does expand as it gets warmer.
Also the leak maybe some where else. Like a rotten line to the transmission cooler, or a leaking seal. But before you go out and spend a fortune on transmission replacement, realize that transmission even new use some fluid. That is why the level needs to be checked on a regular basis.

clean the under side of the engine and transmission. then drive around for awhile and check again. if you keep an eye on it for a while you can determine where the leak is coming from.then you will know where to start. don't use stop leak until last resort ,(that would only be temporary anyhow ) and you would eventually have to replace seals.

The 87 Ford F150 is a 2WD 4.9L in-line 6 manuel trans with dual tank. I changed the oil and oil filter, replaced the wiper motor with used part (mine was slow and stopping), new wipers, replaced the power booster with used part (mine had vacuum leak)(also this one is a little bigger then old one was), replaced bad seal in RR axle and added new gear oil, replaced 90% of brake lines because of rusty and broke when bleeding brakes (all clean brake Fluid now in lines), replaced center drag link (mine was egged and loose steering), replaced seals in steering for leaking, and added clamps to leaf springs (old ones broke or missing). I am not sure what else is need to do a tune up. I see and know of new spark plug wires and dis. cap. New starter and starter solenoid. The truck is running rich with black spitting out exhaust pipe. Have to change the valve cover gasket because of leaking oil as well as oil pan gasket. For oil pan gasket can i use the liquid gasket on it or buy a gasket? Please help me with my truck. I think you may have spent more than the truck is worth, but I think I can help with the brake light problem.
The switch for the brake light is inside near the top of the pedal. As the pedal is mashed, the switch contact makes and the lights come on. there is normally an adjusting nut to set the plunger closer to the pedal in full released position. you need to adjust so that there is about the double distance of a matchbook cover between the plunger and the pedal. This should allow the lights to come on as soon as any pressure is placed on the pedal.I have an 1987 Ford F150 that needs a tune up and more?

i changed the oil and replaced the pan gasket, changed the thermostat had to disconect 2 sensors to get to the thermostat did not disconect battery.. put everything back the way i took it off did not break any wires off ...or for get anything went to start the car and car wont start any ideals, on why it wont start by not disconnecting the battery when i took off the sensors have anything to do with it? and if so how do i reset the the brain tryed to disconect the batery and reconnecting car turns over just wont startHave a 1990 hoda accord wont start?

If your battery power is low, charge it.
Check the connections that you disconnected to make sure -- if you can do it without loosing all the new oil you put in.
You didn't touch by mistake the wires from the ignition system?
Sorry, not much help -- if your car turns over, I would try again, this time floor the accelerator and keep it there - no pumping -- while you let the engine turn over for a little while. If it is flooded this should help.
Edit: perhaps by means of a voltmeter you may be able to determine from the outside if inside sensors (if that's what they were) are connected properly?Have a 1990 hoda accord wont start?

sounds like your crank sensor(located by the pan gasket on the engine block) it may have come disconnected without your knowing.

ok my truck was running fine but i was a lil behind on my oil change so yesterday i went and got my oil changed at a local shop and than went to pick up my friend that lives 60 miles away, 50 miles of interstate, well i go pick him up and everything was ok. well going today to drop him off and after about 30 miles of interstate i hear a pop and i see smoke coming out my exaust in the rear view mirror, than my power steering went out but i got to the side of the road and noticed my brakes were not working either, than i realized my truck shut itself off for some reason. so i look under the truck and see oil coming out from the passanger side of the oil pan where the gasket is. the wrecker told me that there was a good bit of water in my oil cuz it was a yellowish color and it was not really oil textured, how could water get in there i know it wasnt from the shop, it was a well known shop idk if i can say any names on here but it must have got in there some other way, btw there was no leaks that we could see from the outside of the engine like around the heads that water could have got inWater in my trucks oil?

When changing trannys sometimes the dipstick tube can go through a real beating. replace that o-ring. also make sure all lines are tight. dry everything off and try it again. try to look immediately and you will see where it is coming from (before you drive it)

I went in for my routine oil change when the mechanic advised me I had a leak to my 94 Legend. They temporarily fixed this by using an oversized plug.(?) That seemed to remedy the problem but as time went on the little spots on my driveway turned into huge leaks. My mechanic said that the oil pan needed to be changed out and a new gasket kit installed. The job cost me $700 ($300 of labor). That was in Aug 06.
I've had suspicions about my mechanic and how there always seems to be a problem with my car. I have changed mechanics since then. On my last oil change I was advised that I have an oil leak. I had 2 different shops inspect the oil pan/gasket to see if it had really been replaced and both shops said no. One even went as far as to say that they just probably cleaned the pan to look new but upon futher inspection they can definitely say it had not been replaced.
What should I do now? Would getting a lawyer be worth it? I'm leary of going back to the mechanic.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?

You can go back and ask him where he bought the pan from, and have him show you HIS receipt for the pan, NOT the receipt he gave you. Also, you can ask him if he still has your old pan. You can take him to small claims court if you feel you have been ripped off. Make sure you take your other mechanics as witnesses. Getting a lawyer over 700 dollars isn't worth it. Sounds to me like you have a strong case.

If that was recent, take it back, most work at any decent shop will have something like 6mo/6k mi warranty on their work, it will say on the paperwork you signed. If its still covered (longer than 6 mo/6k)... tell them its leaking again, fix it. Funny though, I have an 89 Legend (great choice in cars btw) and the plug, unless cross threaded (prob by them) should never leak. My legend has had the oil changed about every 2k mi and its up to 340k, thats roughly 170 times....no problem here... I cant believe they would suggest a larger olug in the first place. Anyways. If they didnt put on a new one, take pictures, you could take them to small claims court. Besides that, you should ask what the other shops would charge to change it.... its a pretty easy job when its on a lift.... drain the oil, pull the pan and seal, install reverse...add oil and your good.....Auto mechanic rip off...help.?

Your drain plug was probably stripped out from over tightening. Honda/Acuras are famous for being prone to this problem. The only way to fix it right is to replace the pan or repair (weld nut on inside) the pan. Either way the pan has to be removed. I do think the costs seem high. You should check the rates from an Acura dealer. They can look it up in a book. If you were over charged, take them to small claims. Judges don't like crooks. BTW. quick change oil places are known to over tighten and strip drain plugs. The proper method is to use a torque wrench and the replace the crush washer ($0.25) every time the plug is removed.Auto mechanic rip off...help.?

By getting another car! I know it harsh but even if it a $500 car, you will probably be better off, you are going to spend more than that on this pile just guessing at whats wrong. But really it could be that the crank case isn't getting airflow

Well, you didn't. What happened is the oil seals on the valve seats have gotten old and begun to wear and shrink. When the engine is shut down and is cooled off the oil drips into the cylinders. When started, it burns off the oil and leaks in a little more. As the engine heats up, the seals close, the oil leakage stops, and the smoke goes away.
This is not a life or death problem and the engine will continue to run (if that all it is). The problem may reduce some with normal operation (or not). There is a product sold at most auto parts stores called %26quot;engine restore%26quot; it's made by Bardall, comes in a silver can with black letters. Get some, use it. You will be happy again. By getting another car! I know it harsh but even if it a $500 car, you will probably be better off, you are going to spend more than that on this pile just guessing at whats wrong. But really it could be that the crank case isn't getting airflow

Well, you didn't. What happened is the oil seals on the valve seats have gotten old and begun to wear and shrink. When the engine is shut down and is cooled off the oil drips into the cylinders. When started, it burns off the oil and leaks in a little more. As the engine heats up, the seals close, the oil leakage stops, and the smoke goes away.
This is not a life or death problem and the engine will continue to run (if that all it is). The problem may reduce some with normal operation (or not). There is a product sold at most auto parts stores called %26quot;engine restore%26quot; it's made by Bardall, comes in a silver can with black letters. Get some, use it. You will be happy again. It might have froze and caused a leak in the head gasket. Or when you replaced the oil pan gasket it leaked and caused it to over heat that will make it smoke.

I have recently been doing my own repairs/maintenance on my cars. I always use a haynes manual and have or can aquire all of the necessary tools. Recently I changed the oil pan gasket (oil leak), replaced brake fluid and transmission fluid, replaced pvc valve, and I have always changed my own oil.
Im a little slow at doing these things as I like to take my time and do them right. If I did it myself, how long do you think it would take.
I just don't want to go over my head.. I read the instructionss and it doesnt seem to hard. Also, I would likely replace the water pump as well.

Car oil leak repair trouble?
My car (1993 Toyota camry), has slightly oil leak. I went to Toyota dealer for fix. after check, I was told there are 3 leaks, distributor O-ring, Valve seal and oil pan gasket. the main leak is from oil pan. so I decide to fix oil pan gasket, cost 300$. plus wheel adjust, change brakes, total $500. I put car in in the morning, will pick up after work. but at afternoon, I was told they fixed the gasket, after driving test there is still leak, they have redo the work. I have to wait to next day.
Next day, when I pick up car, Service guy told me they found another leak, main seal, to fix it costing 1000$. I suspicious they try to make me spend more money, and I did not see much oil on the bottom. So I said I can afford that cost. I will keep eye on it.
Just I drive out of the shop, on the way I found smoke came out under hood, I drove back, service guy told me it was oil drip on exhaust cause the smoke. I said OK, I'll keep eye on it.
In the following weekend, my wife and I could still sense the burning smell. On Monday I drive to the shop, service guy lift car in air to make sure that's oil burn. To my surprise, there is oil collected under the car, He told me it's main seal leak. I said I never has this problem before, how come after your repair my gasket, then there is this problem out standing? He said, %26quot; you mean to fix gasket, cause this leak? No, they are not related, main seal is up up on top. the repair made the leak worse? It's possible, we can give you $300 credit, so you have to pay $700 to fix the main seal leak. %26quot;
I have no experience how to deal with this case, I said I could pay another $200 to fix main seal leak. He would take it. I want to talk to their manager. I want to hear from your suggestion, what should I do?

Fan clutch blowed up?
I have a 1990 F350 Crew Cab Long Bed(it turns as sharp as a freight train) with the stock fuel injected 351w. About a month ago it stalled, I re-cranked it and there was a whole series of bad sounds under the hood. I turned the key off immediately and pulled it back into my driveway with a chain.
From what I can tell it looks like the fan clutch literally exploded and a piece of it shot through the water pump and into the timing cover.
Its probably a good thing it happened because the water pump was probably about due to be changed and as I got in there I realized the timing chain was worn, and since a piece of fan clutch dropped into the oil pan I had to pull the oil pan which needed a new gasket. Had to pull the plenum to get the motor high enough to change the oil pan gasket so i needed a new plenum gasket too. Also realized it was time for motor mounts and valve cover gaskets and complete tune-up. Anyways the truck is back together and runs great and sounds great... well it sounds great everywhere except from the driver seat. lol the tailpipes are about 20 feet behind my head so I cant hear how beautiful my straight pipes sound from all the way up front. The truck has no catalytic convertors from the factory- I guess it counted as being a heavy duty truck and was exempt from certain emissions laws?
Anyways my question is this.... Anyone other than me ever heard of a fan clutch breaking the water pump and timing cover? I know a lot of mechanics and no one believes me. In my dirt track racing days ive seen plenty of fans come loose and hit the radiator but not the water pump and timing cover.Fan clutch blowed up?
I've never heard of it happening but when something is spinning over 1000 RPMs, anything can happen when something breaks loose.
I knew a guy got killed from a grinding wheel coming apart because he was grinding on the flat side of it. A piece went through his forehead.

Most fan clutches are an oil chamber, and almost can't cause a problem. The worst they do is bind and stop slipping as they are supposed to. This does not sound like an oil hydrostatic clutch. Nissan Sentra GXE 95 Question?
Hi,
I have a Nissan Sentra GXE 95 with 132K mileage on it.
When i went for Oil change @ Firestone yesterday - they mentioned that i need to change my Oil Pan Gasket (est cost $250 to fix from the shop) and there was a possible leak from the Front Crank Seal (est. cost $1000 to fix from the shop).
Now,
- How do i double-check this without going to another shop (due to financial situation)
- If i have to do it myself - How do i change the oil pan Gasket? Any ideas on how to do it? Any istes which have pictorial representation on how to do it?
- How to fix the Front crank seal. I checked/searched the forums but without Pictorial representation or Video - i am unable to figure it out.

Just keep oil in the motor until you have two new fan belts and crank seal in your hands. If you do not know there is a 8mm tensioner bolt just above the A/C compressor and how to loosen the P/S pump do not attempt replacing the crank seal. Crank pulley is held with either a 27mm bolt or 19mm bolt. And if you have to have pictures of breaking off rusted out exhaust nuts and studs. That is done just to remove the exhaust to get to the oil pan don't attempt that job too.Nissan Sentra GXE 95 Question?

But like the mastertech said without experience your in for some hard work. So i your not afraid of hard work go for it. But Research it at the web site I gave you it will help you know what to expect on any repair.

The gasket itself is arround $20 (at least for my car).

I got a 95 CIVIC EX non Vtec, and just found out recently I need a new oil gasket, and that's the reason my oil is running out every 1,000 miles rather than 3,000. I looked for the oil it takes and I came to 5w30. Might it be 10w30? I bought it to the mechanic for check up and he put 2 ounces I believe because it needed it. I wanted to change the oil myself, and I was wondering if i need to drain anything? or can i just pour oil in once i get it.
and other information, this is going to be my first oil change I do on my own, no one ever teaches me everything, so i learn things the hard way, and never took autos. so if u can tell me the do's and dont's about changing oil. all i figure is, unscrew, drain in a pan, then after thats done, keep poring from the top and check the dip stick till its between the two holes.

Before adding Oil, I would go to the parts store (in someone elses car) and buy a bottle of Lucus for your oil (ask the guy and they will know what you are talking about) it will be about 10 bucks a bottle and you will only need one bottle! Lucus is a fantastic product and well worth the money!!!!! BEFORE adding the Lucus chainge your oil filter! then add the bottle, then five quarts of oil. with a leak that bad I would check the oil three or four times a week just to be sure that the leak has stopped. An oil change is simple and easy. JUST AS A TIP: do not use a ratchet to tighten the oil drain plug!!!!!!!!!!! you will strip it IE BAD!!!!!! Unscrew the drain plug and let it run into a pan, put the plug back and put 4 qts. of 10w40 in. Before you do anything, get a new oil drain plug gasket and put the new one on the plug before you screw it back in. And check it every day. I think your mechanic meant you have a leaky oil pan gasket. This is a very tough job for a person who doesn't have much mechanical knowledge. You may want to ask a friend who know of a friend who could replace it for you.
It is certainly rewarding to replace your own oil. You have to put it into consideration of how you are going to dispose of the old oil and oil filter. You will need to buy at least 5qt of oil and oil filter, a wrench to loosen the plug and of course oil filter wrench to remove the filter. You can no longer dump the dirty oil onto the ground any longer. There is no 'oil gasket'.
There is an oil pan gasket, if that is what you mean.
If your oil is 'running out' every 1000 miles then you need to have the leak fixed. Its a huge waste of money to keep buying oil you should have kept for 2000 more miles.
For your car, during colder times, you should use 5w-30 and for hotter times 10w-30. You need 4.5 quarts for your car.
To properly change your oil, you will need:
- Oil
- Oil filter
- 17mm wrench or socket and ratchet
- Oil filter wrench
- Oil pan
- Crush washer
First thing, take the drain bolt off the Oil Pan, let all the oil drain into the pan you have on the floor. And while this is happening there will be a washer around the bolt that you just took out of the oil pan. You need to replace that with the new crush washer. You will now need to replace the bolt into the pan, and tighten.
Next you need to change your oil filter. It is located on the back of the motor underneath the intake manifold. You need to turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. You'll need to use the oil filter wrench to remove it. Be careful because oil will spill out, so have the pan ready.
Once it is fully removed, you will need to check for the oil filter gasket. It might be stuck on the block, if it is, you NEED to remove it. (If you don't, when you put the new filter on and start the car, oil will shoot everywhere) You will have to get the new filter out of the box and then lube the oil filter gasket with oil. Now put the oil filter on, rotating it clockwise, and hand tighten it. Do NOT use the oil filter wrench to put it back on.
Then go ahead and re-fill the motor with oil (and remember 4.5 quarts) Put your oil cap back on, and turn your car on.
Check for any leaks, and have fun.

Before adding Oil, I would go to the parts store (in someone elses car) and buy a bottle of Lucus for your oil (ask the guy and they will know what you are talking about) it will be about 10 bucks a bottle and you will only need one bottle! Lucus is a fantastic product and well worth the money!!!!! BEFORE adding the Lucus chainge your oil filter! then add the bottle, then five quarts of oil. with a leak that bad I would check the oil three or four times a week just to be sure that the leak has stopped. I think your mechanic meant you have a leaky oil pan gasket. This is a very tough job for a person who doesn't have much mechanical knowledge. You may want to ask a friend who know of a friend who could replace it for you.
It is certainly rewarding to replace your own oil. You have to put it into consideration of how you are going to dispose of the old oil and oil filter. You will need to buy at least 5qt of oil and oil filter, a wrench to loosen the plug and of course oil filter wrench to remove the filter. You can no longer dump the dirty oil onto the ground any longer. There is no 'oil gasket'.
There is an oil pan gasket, if that is what you mean.
If your oil is 'running out' every 1000 miles then you need to have the leak fixed. Its a huge waste of money to keep buying oil you should have kept for 2000 more miles.
For your car, during colder times, you should use 5w-30 and for hotter times 10w-30. You need 4.5 quarts for your car.
To properly change your oil, you will need:
- Oil
- Oil filter
- 17mm wrench or socket and ratchet
- Oil filter wrench
- Oil pan
- Crush washer
First thing, take the drain bolt off the Oil Pan, let all the oil drain into the pan you have on the floor. And while this is happening there will be a washer around the bolt that you just took out of the oil pan. You need to replace that with the new crush washer. You will now need to replace the bolt into the pan, and tighten.
Next you need to change your oil filter. It is located on the back of the motor underneath the intake manifold. You need to turn it counter-clockwise to remove it. You'll need to use the oil filter wrench to remove it. Be careful because oil will spill out, so have the pan ready.
Once it is fully removed, you will need to check for the oil filter gasket. It might be stuck on the block, if it is, you NEED to remove it. (If you don't, when you put the new filter on and start the car, oil will shoot everywhere) You will have to get the new filter out of the box and then lube the oil filter gasket with oil. Now put the oil filter on, rotating it clockwise, and hand tighten it. Do NOT use the oil filter wrench to put it back on.
Then go ahead and re-fill the motor with oil (and remember 4.5 quarts) Put your oil cap back on, and turn your car on.
Check for any leaks, and have fun.

93 accord oil leak, help finding the source.?
I have a '93 accord with about 220K miles on it, it developed an oil leak about 6 months ago, that just recently got much worse. It drips on the exhaust and causes alot of smoke and smell.
Now I have degreased and inspected the engine many times, and even used some UV die. It does not seem to be coming from the valve cover as far as I can tell, and it does not seem to be coming from the oil pan gasket either. One of the places it gets is all over the oil filter, however I've replaced the oil filter twice (during regular oil changes) and that hasn't helped it, I even tightened it much tighter than normal last time and that hasn't helped. It almost seems like its coming from above the oil filter, but not as high as the valve cover. Is there something in that area that could be leaking?
The other area it seems to be coming from is the area where the belts are at, however it really coats the whole back side of the engine, so its pretty much covering the belt area, as well as the oil filter area, and pretty much everything inbetween. What other places could it be leaking from if its not the pan, valve cover, or filter?
And also how big of a job would it be to fix an oil leak if it is coming from somewhere such as the belt area, I mean does that involve having to heavily dismantle the engine? Like getting all the way to the crankshaft or pistons or something to replace a seal? Or is it a simpler fix than that, that can be done in my garage?
Is it a big and costly enough job that I might want to consider taking the car to a rebuild shop and have the whole engine rebuilt, or have a new (or low mileage) engine put in at a shop?

Sounds bad but something you can do is have someone accelerate the car while you look under and the car and maybe see where its coming from. Try checking the timing cover

I'm assuming you are referring to a Taurus equipped with the 3.0L OHV V6 engine, since this is the one where it is most common to have the rubber gasket fail and push through causing a massive oil leak. I strongly recommend you purchase the replacement gasket from the Ford dealer parts department because it is updated to the same style used on current model year 3.0L engines which are no longer prone to failure. The part number is 2U1Z-6710-AA for $38.15US. It wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the pan as well if it's rusted. Believe me you are NOT going to want to have to do this job twice! Here are MY instructions:
Disconnect negative battery terminal. Remove air cleaner and air inlet tube as an assembly. Disconnect both UPSTREAM O2 sensor connectors, accessing from the TOP of the vehicle (the ones with the green connectors). Remove the aluminum heat shield and the back side of the engine compartment where it's held in by two black plastic %26quot;pushpin%26quot; type retainers, taking care not to damage the shield too badly. Raise vehicle on a hoist. Remove both UPSTREAM O2 sensors, using a 7/8%26quot; or 22mm wrench, or an O2 sensor socket. Remove the starter. Disconnect both DOWNSTREAM O2 sensors (blue connectors) where they clip onto the area near the steering rack and stabilizer bar. Remove right/front wheel assembly. Using a 15mm deep socket and suitably sized extension with the appropriate air tool, remove the one nut securing the catalytic converter hanger bracket just under the right side axle shaft, accessing from the right side of the vehicle just above the subframe, but below the axle shaft (this may be difficult to see). Using only the same 15mm socket and appropriate driver, remove the one bolt securing the catalytic converter to the transmission pan area, under the vehicle. Using an impact gun with a suitably sized extension and 15mm deep swivel socket, remove the four 15mm nuts securing the catalytic converter assembly to the exhaust manifolds. This may require the use of an oxygen/acetylene torch to heat up the nuts in order to enable removal. Pay particular attention the back two nuts above the transmission. They will be VERY difficult to access. With an assistant, FINESSE the catalytic converter out, and let it hang by the flex pipe out of the way. Using the appropriate extension and driver with 5/16%26quot; socket, remove the one remaining bolt holding the transmission inspection plate cover, and remove cover. With an %26quot;assistant%26quot; holding the engine oil pan in place, remove the sixteen engine oil pan bolts with a 5/16%26quot; socket and appropriately sized extension, with a 3/8%26quot; drive impact gun. Carefully, FINESSE the oil pan out from under the engine, taking care not to damage the windage tray in the pan, or the oil pickup assembly. Remove old pan gasket, and discard. Clean off both gasket surfaces on the oil pan, and the engine block. Install NEW gasket onto oil pan. Dab a small bead of silicone onto engine block at the four corners. H2o in oil pan?
my 91 f150 300ci has water in the oil pan. was my grampas truck. he always said that he had some condensation in the oil pan. truck sat for outside 4 years before i got it. i just did my third oil change in three weeks to flush out anything in the block and in the pan. replaced the gasket before the first oil change. everything looked good in the block. oil pan is new he must have replaced it just before he died. he was a mech for 59 years. any suggestions on how to gett rid of the h2o?H2o in oil pan?
it may just be condensation forming in it,the more you drive it the less condensation you,ll have,you might also want to keep an eye on the coolant level in it,but more than likely its just condensation,you can use a synthetic oil in it and stop that from happening,but you need to drive it also,help circulate the oil some in it,good luck with it.H2o in oil pan?

yes there is a gasket underneath the oil pan, just have the bolts tightened some around the pan first to see if it stops the leak, there are probably about 15 to 20 bolts that hold the oil pan on, if you don't see oil on the ground under your car where you park it all the time it's not leaking bad enough to worry about it right now.

Oil Leak on 1991 Dodge Carivan 3.0 Engine?
I had a leak in my 1991 dodge carivan so i had my friend change the oil pan gasket. Before it was dripping and went thru 1 gallon of oil a day.. Now it goes thru 1 gallon a 1/2 hour. Where could it possibly be leaking. Its not from the valve cover gaskets they are all dry. it looks like the pan but we stripped off the old gasket and put the silicone on the bottom AND the top so it would not leak. any ideas and how hard is what you think it is to fix on this carOil Leak on 1991 Dodge Carivan 3.0 Engine?

To me it sounds like you did something wrong when you changed the pan gasket.That job is quite involved bec not only does all the old gasket have to be properly removed but also the surfaces need to be fully cleaned , plus totally dry , and the even the sequence of what bolts you tighten up first or how much you tighten them up affects the end results.
I'am sure you didn't mean a gallon and you meant a quart of oil but still that amount of oil loss within 30 mins would be extremely noticeable and again if the only place you see wet oil etc is along and on the pan that suggest that the pan gasket is leaking and even an oil drain pan bolt can leak.

How do i replace 1990 chevrolet ck1500 4.3 oil adapter gasket?
i replaced timing chain on the truck, and to get the timing cover back on i had to drop the oil pan. since i had the oil pan off i replaced the oil pump, normal volume not the high volume. i've got everything back together and oil appears to be leaking from the oil filter adapter, where it bolts to block. i had to remove the adapter to change the oil pan and i could not locate a gasket at the parts store, and since i read online it doesnt need a gasket i just cleaned it as best i could and bolted it back up. it appears to have some kind of o ring or something inside it. i was told that the truck had a leak at the rear main seal, but when i took off the flywheel cover it appeared fairly clean inside. my question is this: how do i properly reinstall the oil filter adapter so it won't leak (btw there is NO oil cooler), and could the oil filter adapter have been the problem instead of the rear main? thanks for any helpHow do i replace 1990 chevrolet ck1500 4.3 oil adapter gasket?
The oil filter adapter may well have an O ring and a gasket, which have a great tendancy to leak when at higher milage. Both should be changed.

Pretty straight forward. Get it up in the air, get everything out of the way, take the bolts out, and drop the pan. first drain the oil in a clean pan if you plan on reusing it, there may be a cross-member or exaust pipe in your way, you have to remove those, just remove all the bolts that are holding up the pan, bring the pan straight down because there is an oil pump screen that the pan can get hung up on, after removing the pan, scrape off all the old gasket material making sure you have a smooth dry surface put your new gasket onto, you can use gasket glue to hold the gasket on, make sure you clean the surface on the bottom of the engine too. when you put the bolts back in , make sure you tighten them back and forth, don't tighten any of them until you have all of your bolts started, and don't over tighten them cause this can make it leak, hope this helps, it should'nt be too hard to do if you have some mechanical knowhow. good luck!How to change 2001 Accord oil Pan?

They are and most auto stores or online. autozone.com i know has some. You can also check Honda's website for addition info on ow to do it and what type of stuff you should use. However, ur car is only 8-9 yrs old and u shouldn't have this problem. It could just be something small like a loose bolt or just over-spill from whoever put the oil in. Hopefully its nothing more serious like a rear main seal or something like that. When you take the pan off, check to see if everything is tight and make sure the oil is coming from where the pan meets the engine block. if everything is tight and that IS where the oil is coming from, the replacing the gasket should fix the problem. If not, work your way up and see if you can find the leak. Also, if you have more than 75,000 miles, I recommend using some type of %26quot;high mileage%26quot; oil. 1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?
I have an oil pan gasket problem, one day i went to the local store went in came out and i locked my keys in the truck with it running, i had to call my gf to come let me in which it took her an hour to get to me, mean while right before she came i noticed an oil puddle under the truck, luck for me she got to me in time, i was able to get it home with no problems, anyways i looked under the truck and found that the oil pan gasket had been pushed out from the front of the pan, i read my chilton and it said that the motor had to be pulled to put a new gasket in, i loosened a couple of bolts that i was able to reach and push the rubber gasket back in place and tightened it back up, my question is what would have made that gasket pop out like that ? and my warrenty will not cover the gasket, if i had to have it changed how much do you think it will cost, Thank you to everyone that replys,1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?

I have a 98 ranger, and the oil pan is right there in plain view with no obstructions. Chilton is not a reliable repair manual anyway. You say that you have already loosened a couple of the bolts, did you look to see if the pan would just come down if all the bolts were removed? There should be nothing in the way for you to do this job. Just drain the motor oil, remove all bolts, you may have to %26quot;tap%26quot; the pan with a rubber hammer to break it free, just clean it up, get you a new gasket, put you a thin film of gasket sealent on the pan's gasket surface, (just enough to hold the gasket in place for assembly) put the bolts back in, and tighen them to where the gasket just starts to squeeze, but not too much. put oil back in the engine, check for leaks. now as far as the reason the gasket pushed out could be crankcase pressure, just as a safe measure, replace the PCV valve, they are relatively cheap, you can clean them, but for the cost of a new one, just get a new one.1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?

I can't speak for all cars, but usually you don't need to pull out the entire engine just to replace an oil pan gasket. But with newer fords, who knows? LOL
It can start to leak just from age. I don't think leaving your car running did anything. The oil pan is just that- a big pan. There is a tube hooked to a pump that pulls oil out of it and up through the engine, but it's not like the space in that pan is under lots of pressure.
I'd talk to my mechanic to get a repair estimate. In the meatime keep a very careful watch on your oil level. The big danger is that oil gets low and you damage the engine. I don't trust the Oil Low light to come on soon enough.1999 Ford Ranger Oil Pan Gasket?

How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?
there's a leak in the oil pan of my 93 civic ex, and its not the oil pan gasket, i think the pan strip because i put in a size bigger nut to stop it and it only did for that one time and now that i changed the oil again it started to leak once again, and so is there like a seal that i can put on the nut thing, like would a threadlocker jell work?? without replacing the pan?How can i stop the leak in my oil pan in my civic 93?
have you replaced the drain bolt washer on the plug that you put into the oil pan before you refilled the engine with oil? If you don't replace the drain bolt washer when you change the oil you will get a leak from the drain bolt.
if you've already tried to jam a larger bolt into the drain bolt hole then you've probably damaged the threads and have oil leaking through the thread. Other than replacing the oil pan, which you'll probably have to do if that is the case, the only other thing to try is a product like %26quot;lock-tite%26quot; to seal the threads.

2001 Honda Civic Oil Pan Gasket Question!?!?
I have a 2001 Honda Civic 2 door coupe. I got the oil changed at Jiffy Lube recently, but just today I noticed that the oil was leaking. I took it back to Jiffy Lube and they told me that I need to have a new oil pan gasket put in. I called a mechanic to see how much this would run, and they told me it would cost around $300. They told me that the part was $50, and that it would take around 3 hours to put in. I don't know very much about cars at all. Can someone please tell me if this is around the right price range?

I have a 2000 Chevy S-10 4 cylinder automatic that has a leaky oil pan gasket. At least that's what I was told when I had the oil changed. My question for the forum is about how much I should expect to pay to fix this. I called a couple of garages and I was told that it would require R and I of the engine. The only one to give me a guesstimate said about 700 dollars. Another one wants me to bring it in so that he can look at it and see if it is actually the oil pan gasket, then see if there might be another way of getting to it. Hi, Usually just loose bolts around the pan. Sometimes you can just snug up the bolts around the pan to stop a leak. You'll feel, when tightening them. How loose they are. They do not need to be cranked down so hard as to snap them off. More problems then. Around 10-15 lbs of tork. I use a socket wrench, held close to the head. Not the end of the wrench. To tighten. Can't put too much tork to it that way. Stop leak in a bottle isn't the way to go. You don't list the car %26amp; engine you have. Otherwise I could of got more specific. The surest fix for your problem is a new oil pan drain bolt form the dealer of your auto. It'll have a new gasket already installed. Too many times aftermarket oil pan drain bolts have inadequate sealing washers and will not mate to the oil pan's opening taper. The flange bolts have seal gaskets that are made of copper or a very hard grade of nylon.

1984 Toyota PIckup - how to remove tie rods to get to oil pan?
I have a 1984 toyota pick up and we are trying to change the oil pan gasket but we are having trouble getting the tie rods of to get to it. I read somewhere that you need a tie-rod-end puller or a two-jaw unit. What is this used for? Never messed with tie rods before so I want to make sure I dont mess the truck up but I NEED to change that gasket. Don't get the pickle fork, that might damage the tie rod ends, make sure it's the puller that you have to tighten down to pop them off.
The best stuff I've used for that oil pan is the Toyota FIPG gasket maker. It's a tube of RTV type stuff and works great at sealing up that oil pan. They sell it at the dealer for like $5.

my best advice is to make damn sure it's the oil pan gasket and not the intake manifold gasket or something else up top leaking and running down the ends of the block. I just read the service manual procedures and it looks like for both the 3.8L and the 5.7L you pretty much have to drop the engine cradle down to access the oil pan. Not to mention that they use RTV sealant on both sides of the new oil pan gasket so chances are you are going to get RTV all over everything. And if you have any oil anywhere the RTV goes, it won't seal and you'll be doing it all over again. So make sure it's the oil pan gasket leaking. Could be close to a 10. If you are lucky you can lift the engine maybe 12 inches or so. That would probably mean taking your exhaust loose and wires too in order not to break them. my best advice is to make damn sure it's the oil pan gasket and not the intake manifold gasket or something else up top leaking and running down the ends of the block. I just read the service manual procedures and it looks like for both the 3.8L and the 5.7L you pretty much have to drop the engine cradle down to access the oil pan. Not to mention that they use RTV sealant on both sides of the new oil pan gasket so chances are you are going to get RTV all over everything. And if you have any oil anywhere the RTV goes, it won't seal and you'll be doing it all over again. So make sure it's the oil pan gasket leaking. Could be close to a 10. If you are lucky you can lift the engine maybe 12 inches or so. That would probably mean taking your exhaust loose and wires too in order not to break them. I agree with roy. take the motor mounts loose and raise the engine a few inches. the shape of the pan will help you get the clearance you need. usually 4-5 inches is enough and you should not have to take the tranny loose for this activity. remember SAFETY FIRST and make shure the engine is well supported before you put your hands or other body parts under it. You know you need to pull the engine because you know you need to pull the pan to replace the gasket and you can't pull the pan with the subframe in the way.
So here's the trick: Use a cherry picker, rent, or borrow one if you don't have one. You can find them cheap and sell them for the same price you bought one for. Hook it up and support the engine using the cherry picker. Now get up under your car and unbolt the motor mounts to the subframe, take out the subframe, it's the frame your engine is setting on, it comes right out with a few bolts. Now drain the oil, remove the pan, scrape the old gasket off precisely, place the new gasket on the pan, put the pan back on, bolt the subframe back in, bolt the engine back to the subframe, disconnect the cherry picker.
When it's all said and done, you spent 1 evening at the most and less than $30. Add the price of the cherry picker and maybe more like $130 but as I said, you can sell it later, or take it back and say it didn't work LOL
The beauty of this is you didn't really disconnect ANY of the wires or hoses to the engine. That takes forever to put those back on.
You can do it, just dig in.

This baby is lots of fun. you need to lift the motor allmost completely out. Lifting it slightly without removing the trans will not work. It does not clear the oil pump pickup tube. Sorry, but it is better to pull the motor. I`ve done to many of these being towed in from diy`s who tried to cut corners. One guy even cut the pan in half and still couldn`t get it off. I dont know how the ranger is but I know in a 91 aerostar they left the engine in the van and they had to take the muffler, starter, and a whole bunch of other stuff off to replace it and the total for labor alone was $250.00 but you will not find anyone cheap to do it. It would not be hard but it would be very very very time consuming and you better know what your doing before you even start messing with the oil pan gasket.

It's a 2008 Mazda6. Is this something I'll be able to wait for at the dealer? Or should I drop it off for the day? Or is it a really big job that will require me to leave it overnight? Yuk. Those were a major pain. Raise engine till it lifts the car almost, drop pan and remove oil pump to get clearance to remove pan. Or do what I always did, leave pan in vehicle, remove old gasket carefully, make sure pan and block are clean, make sure oil pickup screen is clear, contact cement new gasket to block, install the end rubber gaskets with silicone, let it setup long enough so they wont move, re-install pan. Then put gasket on pan and reattach, being careful not to over-tighten. follow a Cross pattern for tightening bolts in order to get even bolt pressure.
